Public Invited to Open House for Retiring Police Chief Viverette

From the City’s Website:

The City of Gaithersburg will hold an open house for retiring Police Chief Mary Ann Viverette on Monday, May 7, 2007. The reception will be held from 6 to 7:15 p.m. in the Second Floor Gallery at City Hall, 31 South Summit Avenue. Reservations are not required.

“The Police Chief position is a very public one, and we realize that there are many people in the community who would like to wish the Chief well and thank her for her contributions to our community,” said City Manager David Humpton.

Chief Viverette’s last day will be Friday, May 18, 2007. She joined the Gaithersburg Police Department in 1979, holding all ranks until her appointment as Chief of Police in 1986. Gaithersburg has seen its force grow from a complement of three sworn officers and one civilian clerk when it was formed in the early 1970’s to a staff of over 50 today.

With assistance from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the City has conducted a thorough search for a new Police Chief. A final pool of six candidates was introduced to the public at a reception on March 28. An announcement is anticipated in the next few weeks. For more information please contact the City Manager’s Office at 301-258-6310 or cityhall@gaithersburgmd.gov.

Gazette this week, part 2

  • Chris Robinson writes: Teen raped walking home from school

A Gaithersburg teen was lured into the woods by an unknown man and raped on her way home from school late last month in Montgomery Village, county police report.

The victim, 15, was walking in the 10300 block of Royal Woods Court at about 6 p.m. March 26 when a man approached her and said he needed assistance with his girlfriend who was injured and lying in the nearby woods, a police report states.

  • Chris Robinson writes: Quince Orchard area hit by three armed robberies

The Quince Orchard Road area of Gaithersburg suffered a rash of armed robberies last week, including one home invasion.

    No injuries were reported.

Though the suspects involved have similar descriptions, Montgomery County and Gaithersburg police said they do not believe the suspects are the same or that the cases are related.

Gazette this week, part 1

  • Margie Hyslop writes: Local bills await governor’s signature

Among the bills passed by the General Assembly and needing Gov. Martin O’Malley’s signature to become law are measures that would:

*Prohibit Montgomery County from levying a special property tax on residents of Gaithersburg, Rockville and Washington Grove for maintenance and use of county parks, recreation facilities and programs.

Montgomery and Prince George’s County Councils and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, which runs the two counties’ parks and programs, would be required to issue a report to the state legislature that analyzes user fees for parks and related services in the counties and municipalities. The municipalities, which operate their own parks and programs, argued that their residents should not be taxed twice.

  • Chris Robinson writes: Still time to comment on absentee ballot availability

The revision would allow absentee ballots for city elections without providing a reason. The Ad Hoc Election Participation Advisory Committee and Board of Supervisors of Elections suggested the revision during a public work session in March.

  • Sebastian Montes writes: Goshen homes nearing historic status

‘‘When we came through a couple years ago, this place was in ruins,” said Joanne Atay, vice-chairwoman of the Goshen Historical Preservation Society, which has been pushing the county for years to grant the Black and White Inn historical status.

They marvel at its greatly restored state. But the immediate thrill is overshadowed by the deep relief from their years of work finally bearing fruit: the Black and White Inn, along with three other homes in Goshen, could at last win the protections of historical designation as early as this summer.

Those four Goshen homes would be the first African-American homes to be individually added to the historical atlas created in 1976.
