Regular readers may recall the robbery two weeks ago of the Bank of America on N. Summit Ave. On Wednesday, MCPD released a statement saying that they had arrested a Mr. Timothy James Denzel for the crime. This press release is pasted in below.

It is interesting to note that, according to court records, at the time of the bank robbery, Mr. T.J. Denzel was out on a $40,000 bond, awaiting sentencing in charges dating from last August 10, when T.J. Denzel had been charged with first degree burglary, theft of more than $500 and lying to a police officer. On March 16, he had entered a plea of guilty to the theft charge (according to the court order accepting the plea, it was conspiracy to commit theft), and was scheduled to be sentenced on June 11. On May 3, his bond was revoked, presumably as a result of being held without bond on armed robbery charges.

In a tangentially related note, according to an email I received via a neighborhood mailing list, Timothy James Denzel has a brother named Jaime Cowger Denzel. J.C. Denzel is the man who was shot last September by a Gaithersburg Police officer following the robbery of the Subway Restaurant in Kentlands. He was charged with armed robbery, two counts of first degree assault, theft of more than $500 and theft of less than $500, and bail was set at $1,000,000 cash. At the time of that robbery, J.C. Denzel was also out on $40,000 bond, also for a burglary that had occurred between August 4 and August 10 of 2006, for which he was charged with first degree burglary, conspiracy to commit first degree burglary, theft of over $500 and theft of less than $500. It is unclear from the court records whether the similar charges for the two brothers were for the same burglary.

In any event, on January 17, while Timothy Denzel continued to be out on $40,000 bond, Jaime Denzel entered guilty pleas for both the burglary and the robbery charge. Sentencing for those two crimes was set for April 11. On that date, Judge Paul H. Weinstein entered the sentences: For the burglary charge, fifteen years in prison, all but six of which suspended, and five years of supervised probation. For the robbery charge, ten years in prison, all suspended, to run concurrently with the burglary sentence, and five years of supervised probation. Perhaps if he behaves himself he will be out again in three years.

On April 13, Jaime Denzel was delivered to the Sheriff. Six days later, on April 19, the Bank of America was robbed, and eight days after that, on April 27, Timothy Denzel, still out on the $40,000 bond from the August burglary, was arrested and charged with robbery.

Police Arrest Man for Bank of America Robbery

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division - Robbery Section have charged Timothy James Denzel, age 30, of the unit block of Russell Avenue in Gaithersburg, for the Bank of America robbery that occurred last month.

On April 19 at approximately 1:02 p.m., Montgomery County Police 6th District officers responded to the Bank of America, located at 22 North Summit Avenue in Gaithersburg, for the report of a bank robbery that had just occurred.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a suspect walked into the bank, approached the teller, and passed a note announcing the robbery. The suspect implied he had a weapon, demanded cash, and the teller complied. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect fled the bank on foot towards West Diamond Avenue. No one was injured during the incident.

Denzel was developed as a suspect and with the help of Gaithersburg City’s Street Crimes Unit was arrested by detectives on Friday, April 27. Detectives are investigating Denzel’s involvement in a robbery of the same bank back in November of 2005.

Timothy James Denzel was charged with armed robbery and theft over $500. He is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center.
