    A Gaithersburg teen was fatally injured Tuesday evening when he was hit crossing the road near a McDonald’s restaurant in Derwood, Montgomery County police reported.

    Esia Lopez, 17, of the 8500 block of Snouffer School Road, died Wednesday at the Baltimore Shock Trauma Center, police said.

  • AP Writer Stephen Manning reports via the Examiner, Courts work to find interpreters as more rare languages show up:

    After three years of searching, officials finally found an interpreter available for the sexual abuse case against a Liberian man who is one of only about 100,000 people worldwide who speak Vai.

    But it was too late.

  • Rich Cholodofsky writes in the Tribune-Review, Trucker Acquitted in Diplomat’s Death:

    A Maryland truck driver was found not guilty Thursday of vehicular homicide in a fatal traffic crash along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in February that killed a Honduran embassy official.

    A Westmoreland County jury deliberated about an hour yesterday before finding there was not enough evidence to convict Sam Thompson, of Gaithersburg, of the misdemeanor charge.

Attempted Strong Arm Robbery
On 08/01/07, at approximately 2:48 a.m., a man was walking on the sidewalk in the 600 block of South Frederick Avenue when he was approached by three male suspects. The suspects accosted the man and demanded that he give the suspects his wallet. A struggle ensued. An off-duty police officer observed the robbery and stopped to assist the victim. The suspects fled the area on foot towards West Deer Park Road. The victim was uninjured. The incident is still under investigation.

Suspect #1: Hispanic male, 5′08″, 150-170, wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans, and a black baseball cap.
Suspect #2: Hispanic male, 5′08″, 150-170, wearing a white T-shirt and white shorts.
Suspect #3: Hispanic male, 5′08″, 150-170, wearing a white T-shirt and black shorts.

Armed Robbery
On 07/31/07, at approximately 9:44 p.m., police responded to the Exxon Station, located at 448 N. Frederick Avenue, for the report of an armed robbery of the business. Investigation revealed that a man entered the business, produced a revolver, leaned over the counter, and stole an unknown amount of cash from the register. The man fled towards the area of Dalamar Street and the fairgrounds. This incident is still under investigation.

Suspect: Black male, 5′10″, thin build, wearing a white T-shirt, white shorts, and a white baseball cap.

Burglary

On 7/31/2007 police responded to the 700 block of Clopper Road for a burglary that occurred earlier. Suspect(s) unknown entered the residence via a side window and removed a laptop computer.
