Rapid City Journal: Police still seek driver in hit-and-run accident that killed retired Journal newsman

Steve Miller writes in the Rapid City Journal:

Bender was crossing a six-lane street in Gaithersburg, Md., about 5:45 p.m. Nov. 26, when a Mitsubishi Eclipse apparently clipped him, causing him to fall, detective Elizabeth Maddox of the Montgomery County Police Department said.

As he was getting up, Bender was struck by a second vehicle, which likely caused his fatal injuries, Maddox said in a phone interview Wednesday.

Neither vehicle stopped.

The driver [of the Mitsubishi Eclipse], Yuris Alexander Chicas-Romero of El Salvador, told police he thought he might have struck something, and when he arrived at his destination, he examined his car but found no damage.

Police also found no damage when they inspected the Mitsubishi.

Unlike the Mitsubishi, the second vehicle would have significant damage, she said. “That guy should have known he hit something substantial.”

Police have asked the public for help in finding the second vehicle and have checked with area auto-body shops. Police received several tips, but none of them panned out.

“We’ve done everything we can think of to try to locate this vehicle,” Maddox said.

December Town Courier

A PDF of the December Gaithersburg edition of the Town Courier has been posted. Two articles I found particularly interesting are:

  • Krista Brick writes, Thousands Spent on Elections Investigation:

Alleged campaign violations are costing city taxpayers at least $15,000 in attorney fees after the Gaithersburg Board of Supervisors of Elections requested legal counsel in determining whether the allegations have merit.

According to One Gaithersburg representative Cezar Lopez, One Gaithersburg spent a total of $11,574.40 on this year’s campaign. The expenses include direct mailings, handouts, election day polling flyers, yard signs and automated phone calls. Lopez stated that the expenses are more than previously reported because of “additional individual contributions made directly to the candidates themselves.” Those additional funds are to be reported directly by the candidates, he said.

  • Sonya Burke writes, City Has an Interest in Crown Farm Cash:

Delays in payment of a $5-million recreation contribution to Gaithersburg’s city coffers from the developers of Aventiene (formerly Crown Farm) are costing the city more than $4,000 a week in interest that could be earned with the money in the bank, according to Assistant City Manager Tony Tomasello.

This month’s Courier also has stories on Kumar Barve’s drunk driving arrest, teen driving fatalities, the principal of Rachel Carson Elementary, Larry Chep, the skate park debate, as well as several other topics.
