Police Investigate Cruiser Collision in Gaithersburg
Officers from the Montgomery County Police 6th District are investigating a collision involving a marked Montgomery County Police cruiser that occurred early this morning.
On today’s date at 1:25 a.m. officers from the 6th District responded to southbound Route 270 south of the Montgomery Village Avenue overpass. Upon arrival, officers observed a Montgomery County cruiser with rear body damage in the middle and right lanes of southbound Route 270. Preliminary investigation revealed that the cruiser had apparently struck the barrier on the left shoulder. The driver of the cruiser was identified as off-duty Officer John Distel, age 32, assigned to the 2nd District. He is a six-year veteran of the department.
Officer Distel stated that another vehicle had struck the cruiser causing him to drive into the barrier. Officers noticed an odor of an alcohol on Officer Distel’s breath and developed further probable cause to arrest him for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Officer Distel has been suspended with pay while the investigation continues.
