Recent City Police Crime Reports

The Summer is getting hotter. A baseball bat to the head, a knife to the hand, sexual assaults at the water park. As for the sexual assault, I’ve searched the court records, and the only arrest I could find by a Gaithersburg officer for a sexual assault on June 24 was of 22 year old Jose L. Hernandez II of S. Frederick Ave, alias Jose L. Aguilar II, alias Jose M. Aguilar. Mr. Hernandez is charged with one count of fourth degree sex offense, three counts of second degree assault, and one count of disorderly conduct. Bail was set at $25,000, but as of this writing the court records do not show that he was able to post this amount — it shows him as still being in jail. A trial has been set for July 22 at 8:30am. Mr. Hernandez also has an outstanding charge dating to December of 2006 for Urinating in public, for which an FTA (failure to appear) warrant was issued in January 2007; as well as charges for two counts of receiving/retaining lost credit cards and one count of having alcohol “in apt. areas” dating to July of 2007, with an FTA warrant issued a week after his arrest. All of these charges have been added to the July 22 trial.

Gaithersburg HELP Needs Your Help

The good people at Gaithersburg HELP asked if I could post the following. Please do what you can to help them out; they are a critical part of the safety net in Gaithersburg:

Gaithersburg HELP, which in 2008 is celebrating 40 years of “Neighbor Helping Neighbor”, provides emergency food, prescription and transportation assistance to Gaithersburg area residents. HELP is an all volunteer organization with no paid employees. A significant increase in the number of families seeking assistance, coupled with the increased cost of food, is causing a strain on the resources of Gaithersburg HELP. Through May 31, 2008, food assistance to residents is up 42% compared to the same period in 2007, with over 5,200 people in 1,300 families receiving assistance so far this year. The organization greatly appreciated the Food Drive conducted by the Diamond Farms Post Office in May, 2008, which resulted in the donation of over 130 Postal bins of food. All of the canned goods collected by the Postal Service have already been distributed to needy families.

At present HELP is purchasing increased amounts of food to meet the extraordinary demand for food assistance caused by current economic conditions. With the school summer vacation, additional need is anticipated since low income children will not be receiving the subsidized breakfast and lunches that they get in school on a daily basis. Donations of non-perishable food and money are especially needed during the summer months as there are fewer church and business sponsored Food Drives.

Businesses interested in holding a food drive or individuals who wish to donate food can call 301-216-2510, ext. 4 for information or email GaithersburgHELP@yahoo.com.

Donations by check should be mailed to:

Boil Water Advisory Lifted

From the County’s website. See also the full health order.

For Immediate Release: 6/18/2008

WSSC Water in Areas Affected by Main Break Safe to Drink According to Latest WSSC Tests
“Boil Water” Advisory Cancelled for Residents and Restaurants

A second negative Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) test has concluded for water samples taken throughout areas of Montgomery County affected by the water main break earlier this week. According to the WSSC, the test results confirm that the water is safe to drink, and the “boil water” advisory for restaurants and homeowners is now cancelled.

“This has been a very difficult week for those residents and businesses affected by the water main break, as well as for the WSSC and County employees who have worked around the clock to make sure that our residents remained safe throughout this ordeal,” said County Executive Isiah Leggett. “This incident has reinforced the County’s strong position for added resources and more focus on addressing the backlog of WSSC maintenance.”

The area affected by the water main break included communities north of the Beltway, with the exception of Rockville City and the Town of Poolesville, which maintain their own water supply systems. County health officials estimated that approximately 1,200 food service facilities were closed initially due the lack of a safe water supply, and then allowed to reopen if they complied with strict public health precautions.

Now that the WSSC has lifted its “boil water” advisory to residents and food service facilities, the following steps are advised to ensure that no health threats remain. Residential water customers should:

  • Flush household pipes/faucets– run all cold water faucets for 5 minutes each.

Boil Water Over

  • Flush home automatic icemakers and make three batches of ice cubes, discarding all three batches before using. Before using, wipe out icemakers with a solution of two tablespoons of household bleach to one gallon of water.
  • Food service facilities should allow water to run for five minutes at each tap to flush the lines with safe water. Misters and drinking fountains should also be flushed, as well as soda machines. Icemakers should also be flushed and cleaned and the first three batches of ice should be discarded.

Questions should go to the County’s Division of Licensure and Regulatory Services at 240-777-3986.
