Not like anyone didn’t know about this, but some nasty storms came through the area today, causing power outages, closed roads and commuter rail shutdowns. According to a story in the Washington Post,

Montgomery officials reported that 30 houses were damaged and 20 roads were closed after the storms, with Germantown and Gaithersburg bearing the brunt. Three hospitals were powered by generators, officials said.

Girard Street was closed for several hours. MARC had tremendous difficulties today, and has canceled service for tomorrow. Several trees fell on the tracks, and, according to an email sent by MTA to MARC passengers, at one point a tree even fell onto a freight train near Gaithersburg.

According to the Gazette, Montgomery County Schools will be closed tomorrow:

Montgomery and Prince George’s county schools will be closed Thursday and Pepco crews planned to work through the night Wednesday to restore power to thousands of residents and businesses after severe storms battered the area, causing massive traffic tie-ups and uprooting trees throughout the region.

Apparently unrelated to the storms was a serious accident on Great Seneca Highway that closed that road for several hours. According to a story by Meghan Tierney in the Gazette,

A man was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon at Great Seneca Highway and Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg when the van he was driving crossed a grassy median and struck another vehicle, a county official said.
