    County Executive Isiah Leggett gave Pepco a B-plus in its response to the power outages last week from the severe thunderstorm that plowed through the county.

    Clean-up crews are out in force this week as they continue to remove trees and debris that clogged yards and blocked roads after last week’s storms.

    Owen Lennon of Gaithersburg got a surprise on Saturday when a black bear came to visit.

    “My wife and I had just come back from shopping and she looked out the kitchen window and said ‘There’s a bear in the backyard!’” Lennon said Monday.

    There was sobbing, comforting and laughter as more than 60 friends and co-workers of Longyuan “Mooney” Wang came together Sunday night to reflect on the too-short life of the 24-year-old waiter stabbed to death on Thursday in what police say was an attempted robbery.

  • Sebastian Montes writes, Police: Neighbors’ dispute ends with man’s suicide:

    Two shots cracked through the thick summer night Monday in Montgomery Village, in a dispute between neighbors that ended with one of the men’s suicide, police said.

  • Patricia M. Murret writes, Montgomery appeals sentence:

    The Gaithersburg teen sentenced last month to five years in prison for convictions of robbery and sexual assault of two women has appealed his case.

    Dion Montgomery, 18 of the unit block of Duvall Lane in Gaithersburg was indicted Sept. 13 on 20 counts including robbery with a dangerous weapon, attempt to commit robbery, second-degree assault, third- and fourth-degree sexual offense and indecent exposure, according to charging documents.

  • Fred Lewis writes, City man killed in police-involved shooting:

    A 25-year-old Gaithersburg man was shot and killed Friday afternoon at a Silver Spring apartment building during an incident involving Montgomery County police.

    Hector Jose Marinero of the 18700 block of Walkers Choice Road was pronounced dead at an area hospital. An autopsy is being conducted by the medical examiner’s office in Washington, D.C. The shooting remains under investigation.

  • Fred Lewis writes, Teen charged as adult for ice cream truck robbery:

    Police charged a 16-year-old Gaithersburg boy as an adult in connection with an armed robbery on a Ride On bus in Wheaton and another at an ice cream truck in Gaithersburg.

    Howard Egba Duncan of the 17000 block of Downing Street was charged with two counts of armed robbery and is being held in lieu of $300,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday at District Court in Rockville.

  • Joe Beck writes, Summer patrols planned for upcounty shopping areas:

    Police officers in the upcounty are preparing to roll out their summer patrols, bringing greater visibility to shopping and gathering areas frequented by teens.

    Fifth District officers in Germantown will trade their squad cars for bicycles to patrol Town Center, while Gaithersburg city and 6th District and city police are stepping up enforcements in Olde Towne and the Kentlands.

  • Meghan Tierney writes, Man killed in Great Seneca Highway crash:

    A Germantown man was killed June 4 at Great Seneca Highway and Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg when the van he was driving passed through a red light and struck two vehicles, police said.

    The driver of the van — a white 2007 GMC Savana — was identified as Soulkhan Oniani, 47, of the 12200 block of McCubbin Lane, according to a Montgomery County Police statement.
