Gaithersburg Named “Capital for a Day” on November 6

Posted 11/3/2008

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz and members of the City Council will welcome Governor Martin O’Malley, Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown, and members of the Maryland cabinet as Gaithersburg becomes Capital for a Day on Thursday, November 6, 2008.

This initiative to visit and conduct business in local municipalities is designed to “strengthen our commitment to protecting our families, creating new jobs, growing our middle class, expanding and improving education, and bringing opportunities to more people,” said Governor O’Malley when announcing the program back in April.  Gaithersburg is the seventh stop on the Governor’s tour of eight municipalities in 2008.

During the visit, elected officials, cabinet secretaries, City staff, business and community leaders will participate in a variety of meetings, briefings and tours.  “Being Capital for a Day gives us the opportunity to show our counterparts at the state level firsthand what an innovative and forward thinking community we are,” said City Manager Angel Jones.

Events open to the public include an open door cabinet meeting from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Monument I Office Building, Gaithersburg’s first LEED certified commercial green building, located at 655 Watkins Mill Road.  The public is also invited to a press conference during which the City will receive official designation as the Capital for a Day.  The press conference will take place from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. at the City Hall Concert Pavilion, 31 South Summit Avenue.
