Interesting article on buying a house in Gaithersburg

Last Sunday, the Washington Post Magazine had a long story on one couple’s experience in buying a home in Gaithersburg; they wound up buying a new-construction townhouse in Hidden Creek:

Christina Ianzito writes, Take a Deep Breath:

On an especially frigid Saturday in December, the day’s newspapers are filled with gloom: One headline warns, “Mortgage Troubles Rise to Record Level,” another that “U.S. Loses 533,000 Jobs in Biggest Drop Since 1974.” Yet, even with housing prices showing no sign of halting their steep decline and amid the greatest economic insecurity in decades, Diego and Jessalynn Gomez are driving up Interstate 270 toward Gaithersburg, planning to take their inaugural plunge into a real estate market that’s gone ice-cold.

In their Honda, Diego and Jessalynn follow Messerschmitt’s car on the 25-minute drive from Georgetown. As they pass a series of strip malls in Gaithersburg, Jessalynn checks her BlackBerry in the passenger seat, while Diego notes softly, “We are really out.”

But then they turn a corner and dip over a hill to find themselves heading down toward a nearly treeless new community called the Glen at Hidden Creek, where large three-story townhomes are lined up neatly on a grid of streets, like a pristine little village. “Oh, my God!” says Jessalynn, excited. “Look how cute that is!”

They park behind Messerschmitt in front of a brick-front townhouse, and Diego says, “I’m picturing teaching my kid to ride a bike down this street.”

“I’m actually picturing Halloween,” Jessalynn replies.

Note that on Monday there was also an online chat about this article.
